三只小猪想离开家到外面的世界闯一闯，寻找他们的运气。只小猪用稻草盖了一个房子，第二只小猪用木棍盖了一个房子，这两只小猪都以最快的速度盖出了自己的房子这样他们就能早点去闲逛，以享受这一天剩余的美好时光。然而第三只小猪则很自律。他规规矩矩的地仔细用砖头砌了一座房子，这绝不是“工程”。即使他被两个哥哥嘲笑干的太慢，它也没有少砌一块砖。

一晚，一只大灰狼出来觅食。他来到了只小猪的房子里，像小孩子一般殷切地说道：“小猪，小猪让我进来吧。”尽管小猪说不，狼还是把房子吹倒了。只小猪就这样被狼吃掉了。狼又以同样的方式将木棍房推倒。第二只小猪也不幸被狼吃掉了。不过当狼想以同样的方式推到第三只小猪的房子时，由于房子实在太坚固了，根本就无法推倒。狼怒了，但即使它发怒了，第三只小猪的房子依旧安然无恙，因为这个房子是用砖头一块一块砌成的。

这个故事的寓意就是：努力终有回报；在合适的时机应该做合适的事情。尽管做事情的时候很难立刻看到事情的效果，但是金子总会发光，最终会有好结果的。
